Mum has bought a shiny new camera in anticipation of the trip -- it's fantastic, very close to the professional ones I use at work.

We've been faffing around with it a bit, and I thought that I'd share a photo or two of my own Jack with you.

Jack is my dog, in spite of the fact he hasn't lived with me, except for short intervals when I've come back to live with Mum and Dad, for a decade. He's getting on now -- nearly fifteen -- but he's still the most beautiful-natured, loyal, loving dog I've ever encountered. The chief joy of his young life was to round up cattle; when we got rid of the cattle from the home farm he lost that, because he wasn't allowed to chase the deer (they have a bad habit of falling down dead when chased) and he knew that chasing the guinea fowl was futile (they had a bad habit of flying away while he was trying to draft them). So he contented himself with mustering small packs of children for years, to the point where you'd be headed in one direction and suddenly find yourself somewhere completely different, thanks to the tenacity of one border collie cross.

I'm a bit teary this weekend, as I'm fairly sure I'll never see Jack again. So I'm pleased to have taken a couple of decent photos of him to take with me.

In the interests of fairness, this is Midge, who was my grandmother's dog. Mum inherited him last year, and he adores her to bits. She, a cat person to the death, can't figure out how she's become "a woman who owns dogs, plural." But she also allows that, "it's hard not to get fond of something that loves you so unconditionally." He's also fiercely loyal, quite stupid looking, and terribly annoying in the manner of small dogs. I've got a big soft spot for him, though, because as Mum says, he wants only to be loved in life.

Jack is a beautiful dog.

Isn't he? Wheras Midge is more like a brown and white bat with four legs.

I was really tired last night and couldn't find anything kind to say about Midge other than, well at least he seems larger than a cat.

Which would only make sense if you know how much I believe dogs need to be larger than cats and how much I've wanted my friends annoying little dog to be eaten by her large cats. It's been 3 years so I think they're going to let him live even though he's prey sized.

I'm with you -- we'd never had a dog smaller than Jack until Mum inherited Midge when Nan died. And despite his endearing qualities, I'd never choose a little dog, either.

My dad calls him "rat features".

Oh! I love dogs, as well as cats. That first shot of Jack, looking up at you, is *so* sweet. I'm glad that you've been able to spend some time with him before you leave. Thank you for sharing him with us.

He's a really sweet dog! I'm so not a dog person but I think I would really love yours. And I mean this seriously, usually when people post pictures of their dogs I just ignore them altogether.

Awwww. Jack has such liquid eyes. He is beautiful indeed. There, there. He'll be happy when he finally makes that trip beyond the Rainbow Bridge.

I admit to squealing over both of them, but *whispers* Jack is obviously the beauty of the two.

Oh, don't worry about whispering. We tell Midge that too his face, regularly. "Don't steal Jack's food; he's bigger, older and better-looking than you."

Also not a dog person, but Jack is exactly the sort of dog who sneaks past my dog defences.

Despite my great love for my own feline simpleton, I am a dog person too (well, a fairly equal dog-and-cat person), and those photos make me REALLY want a dog. Although sadly, a dog and Ju Ju would be unlikely to cohabit in harmony, so I don't think it'll be happening for a while.

Hurrah! Another cat-and-dog person! Ju Ju would probably be like our old Fred -- who lived until he was seventeen or so -- he just used to whack Jack across the nose if Jack was being annoying. And then he'd nuzzle up to him if he thought no humans were looking. Otherwise? COMPLETELY beneath his dignity.

He was really, really upset when we came out one morning and found him and Jack curled up together on the verandah in the sunshine.

The cutest cat-dog interaction I've heard about is B's old dog, who used to sit up and let their cat scratch his chest with her paws.

Jack is adorable.

They're both beautiful dogs. I'm a mostly a cat person, but if I saw any way that 2 cats and a dog could share a 1 bedroom, I'd want a dog like Jack.

I'm sure Jack would be immensely flattered to hear himself referred to as a puppy.

Oh, Jack! So beautiful. I secretly crave a dog, but can't ever imagine living in one place for long enough.

I'm sort of the same, and I'm so lucky to have had him at Mum's all these years where he still gets his acres to run around and "help" (these days it's all about getting excited when Dad goes out somewhere with a shovel or spanner, and then flopping down somewhere to watch him work.) But itinerant apartment lifestyle is no way to raise a decent-sized dog, so sadly, I'm like you.

I'm going to have to find British dog owners.
